Romance astrology recognizes that every relationship has a power equation – that is to say, someone is more in control than the other one. At any given time the power in the relationship is in the hands of the person who has least stake in the relationship’s continuance – the least to lose from a break-up. As a result, the power equation in any relationship usually teeter-totters back and forth over the life of the relationship. While there is no way of using the study of astrology and love to determine who has the power at any given time, what can be seen in the horoscope is the way that the partners use their power when it comes their way. This is shown by the position of Venus relative to the sun at the moment a person is born. When Venus is a morning star, rising in the east before the sun (between Inferior Conjunction and Superior Conjunction), then the desire nature is possessive. When Venus is an evening star, setting in the west after the sun (between Superior Conjunction and Inferior Conjunction), then the desire nature is dispassionate. Dispassionate types need a lot of elbow room and freedom: they defend their personal liberty against encroachment. Since the trend over the past centuries since the industrial revolution has been away from possessiveness and towards dispassion, the institution of marriage has also been changing in that direction. This means, for example, that according to the theory of astrology and love marriage is becoming less a matter of romantic infatuation or an economic arrangement (which are possessive ideas); and more a matter of collaboration between distinct individuals who each do their own thing (which is a dispassionate idea). Therefore, people who are dispassionate types have a bit more power to start with than do possessive types, since the Zeitgeist favors dispassion.

The two Venus types have very different expectations of marriage. The possessives want a commitment to the relationship for itself, so they have less interest in whether there is a shared philosophy, interests, hobbies, etc. Possessives have an expectation of fidelity and mutual self-sacrifice (especially by the other person). They are more concerned with a commonality of purpose rather than of interests. The wedding ring is a symbol of possessiveness: it is a sign of ownership which is more humane than branding. Possessive types tend to look at people in terms of the use to which they can be put or the services they can render; but it must be said that they are willing to serve other people in turn. On the other hand, the astrology and love relationships preferred by the dispassionate types feature mutual self-sufficiency, where both partners can make their individual decisions independently. For these types marriage is basically a friendship, which entails nothing more than good faith and benevolent interest. They are democratic and friendly, drawing little distinction between people: they are equally closed or open, to spouse and strangers alike. Dispassionates like their romance astrology relationships to have a minimum of self-adjustment, clinginess, or inconvenience. Where the two partners happen to meet, then they meet; and where they don’t meet, they each go their separate ways. They must have a life of their own, and they will never permit a relationship to be the centerpiece of their life, or to permit themselves to depend critically upon anyone. The wedding ring is a symbol of dispassion: something which the woman can pawn after the divorce.

It might be supposed that a marriage between two possessive types or two dispassionate types would tend to be more successful than a mixed marriage, in which the two people soon learn that they’re not going to have their expectations fulfilled. The power equation in these relationships stands out in bold relief. When the two partners are of the same Venus type they are at least following the same basic roadmap; however this guarantees nothing since even in these cases one finds that the other is reading the map upside down.
